Our pigs live in multigenerational herds because it allows the animals to teach one another how to best live on this land. Our pigs exhibit robust health, excellent foraging skills, inspiring maternal instincts, and friendly personalities. We want them to grow delicious meat from the foods that they can forage from our land, but not grow so fast that they become unhealthy, as many animals do when fed an exclusively grain diet.
In early spring, our (grand)mama sows farrow (give birth) in our protected animal shed. The moms and piglets then spend the summer months living in the woodlands and hedgerows that surround and edge our home pasture. For now, a significant portion of their diet comes from organic, non-GMO, soy-free Vermont-grown grains as well as fruit, vegetable, and nut gleanings from neighbors and local farms and processors. We are working to grow more of their food and shelter habitat on our land by planting and regenerating fruit and nut trees and shrubs.
